Since people often ask us for advice on how to color their hair naturally, we'll start for a few
recipes you can use to enhance your goddess-given hue. With all of those nasty chemical dyes floating around out there, who knew that a few simple ingredients in your kitchen could alternatively boost your natural color, without the toxic ingredients?
That’s right, mother nature has some tricks up her sleeve!
1. diy hair treatment for blondes
Lighter hair shades can always benefit from a pick-me-up. In this case, I’m referring to a natural gloss or brightener. If blondes really do have more fun, then this color boost will surely enhance your sandy, buttery or golden locks with a touch of hydration.
INGREDIENTS:
1 lemon, juiced
1 tsp honey
1/2 cup chamomile tea
1 tsp honey
1/2 cup chamomile tea
DIRECTIONS:
- Combine all ingredients and store in a 8 oz. spray bottle.
- Spray onto clean sections of hair, at your tips, roots or wherever you need a little brightening. This works ever better when used before going into the sunshine, as the citric acid in lemon juice, when exposed to heat, will open the hair cuticles and lift out the pigment. This can also be used on darker hair shades for natural highlights.
- For subtle and beautiful results, leave in. No rinsing necessary.
2. diy hair treatment for brunettes
Shout out to all of our fellow brunettes! I love being one. This DIY recipe gives you a thick, chocolatey paste that you'll love applying.
The cacao powder provides a richness to your brown undertones, penetrating deep into the hair shaft with help from the acids in both yogurt and apple cider vinegar. Chocolate on my head? Yes, please!
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup cacao powder
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 tsp honey
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 tsp honey
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
DIRECTIONS:
- Mix all ingredients together into a paste.
- Apply the mixture to clean, damp hair. Spread thoroughly into hair, working from the roots down to the tips. Leave in for 15-30 minutes. I recommend wrapping your hair in a dark colored towel or shower cap while you wait to avoid any mess.
- Rinse thoroughly and voilà! Your mane just got earthier.
3. diy hair treatment for redheads
Red hair is a rarity. In fact, in the United States it is estimated that only 2-6% of the population has red hair.
This color-boosting formula uses the juiciest of ingredients to keep those fibers radiating fire! Carrots, rich in vitamins A, C, E and K, help to nourish your hair, while cranberries enhance those ginger-undertones. Again, the acids in yogurt and honey help the fruit and veggie pigments to penetrate into your strands. This treatment gives carrot-top a whole new meaning!
INGREDIENTS:
3 carrots
1/2 cup cranberries
3 tbsp plain yogurt
2 tbsp honey
1/2 cup cranberries
3 tbsp plain yogurt
2 tbsp honey
DIRECTIONS:
- Chop the carrots and add to a food processor, creating a gritty paste. Add the cranberries, yogurt and honey and pulse a few times to thoroughly mix.
- Scoop the paste out and begin applying onto clean, damp hair. Spread from root down to the tips of your hair. Wrap your head in a towel or shower cap and leave on 15-30 minutes.
- Rinse, condition and style as desired. Hello vibrancy!
4. deep conditioning avocado diy hair treatment
Who wouldn’t want to mash up one of nature’s perfect foods and massage it into their hair? If you’re a foodie like me, this is kind of a dream.
If applying green avocado mush on it’s own sounds intimidating, add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil. You'll feel like like you're adding straight guacamole to your head.
Avocados have been used as far back as early Egyptian times to improve hair condition. These nutritious fruits are rich in vitamins A, B6, C, E, K, potassium, protein and copper—all of the hair loving essentials. This is also a great way to use overripe, mushy avocados.
INGREDIENTS:
1-2 avocados, mashed
2-3 drops of essential oil
1 tbsp of carrier oil (optional)
2-3 drops of essential oil
1 tbsp of carrier oil (optional)
DIRECTIONS:
- Mash up avocado in a bowl, add in your EO’s and carrier oil, and mix thoroughly.
- To ready your hair for application, shampoo, rinse, and wring out excess water. Apply mixture to hair, focus on roots and dry areas.
- Wrap your head in a towel or chill out for 15 minutes to allow all of the deep conditioning properties to penetrate into your strands. If your hair needs extra moisture, feel free to mix in an oil of your choice like olive, jojoba or even our coconut body oil. Rinse thoroughly.
- Depending on your hair type, you may want to follow with your normal conditioner.
5. diy ‘get wavy' hair spray
My all time favorite hair is beach hair. I grew up in Southern California and just loved how sea salt, sea breeze and sunshine had a way with my hair. One of my favorite bloggers, Wellness Mama, has a great DIY Beach Wave Hair Spray that I want to feature because it’s a simple yet effective method for achieving effortless waves. It’s like ocean in a bottle!
INGREDIENTS:
Hot water
Epsom salts
Himalayan or sea salt (optional)
Aloe vera gel (we recommend Mountain Rose Herbs)
A few drops of carrier oil such as jojoba, coconut or olive
A few drops of essential oil (to mimic a fresh ocean scent, try using ylang ylang, cedarwood, rose and bergamot)
Optional: 1 teaspoon vodka or grain alcohol to preserve formula (if not storing in refrigerator)
DIRECTIONS:
- Combine all ingredients and store in a 10 oz. glass spray bottle.
- Before using, shake for 1 minute until salts are completely dissolved.
- Spray thoroughly onto damp hair and begin “scrunching” those locks with your hands or a dry towel. Salt pulls moisture out of the hair, which gives it that natural wave. The oils are added into the formula to avoid drying out your hair.
- If your hair is naturally straight, braid hair into sections and spray generously with the mist. Leave in for several hours or sleep with them overnight. Remove braids and enjoy the waves! You’re a beach babe.
